1996, a Japanese university lab full of Net Yaroze (Sony's Programmable Playstation).

The Net Yaroze, didn't ship with a generic game engine, instead it utilized a highlevel framework, think openGL but with no primitives but instead a complex binary file format.

Now that I'm coding my own engine for the 3DS, I can appreciate what this highlevel framework was trying to achieve, it's a lot of work just on PC, let alone on a console!
