Update: 2014-03-02 Mad catz MOJO Final thoughts
Below is not maintained and out of date.
If you’re still struggling with the price issue, here’s how I work out the value of this:
Split the cost between micro-console and controller, listing the values of each, which in turn have a money value to you.
IE:
$170USD Tegra4/2GB-RAM-16G Micro-console
$??? High-end Android gaming, better 3D emulation, better multi-tasking, better top set-box etc
$??? Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) Hopefully soon updated to Android 4.3 and Open GL ES 3
$??? No re-buying Android games (no manufactures ecosystem, ie ouya, playjam)
$??? No re-buying cheap hardware and a disposable controller every year
$??? Ability to continue mobile games seamlessly from TV to mobile and optionally using the C.T.R.L.R
$??? Ability to use common BT/USB peripherals (controllers, keyboards, mouse etc)
$??? 16GB internally storage, compared to Ouya’s and gamestick’s 8G
$??? MicroSDXC slot (up to 128G)
$??? USB3 port (10x faster USB2, excellent for external drives) and USB2 port
$??? Bluetooth Smart- lower latency 7ms. Compared to XBox360’s 20ms, PS3’s 22ms, Ouay’s 100ms BT2.1
$??? Bluetooth Smart- Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE), power saving
$??? Nvidia GameStream
$??? Portable size console - console, controller(s) and cables fit in a small bag.
$??? Rootable device
$80USD High tech C.T.R.L.R
$??? First party build quality - not cheap and not disposable
$??? Console grade Controller - no missing buttons ie Ouya’s missing start/select & gamestick’s R2/R2
$??? Bluetooth Smart- lower latency 7ms. Compared to XBox360’s 20ms, PS3’s 22ms, Ouay’s 100ms BT2.1
$??? Bluetooth Smart- Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE), power saving, 40+ hours of use on 2 AAA batteries
$??? 3 separate Bluetooth HID modes: Mobile, mouse(with scroll-wheel, left, middle, right click), Desktop
$??? Use it on everything! ANDROID/WIN/LINUX/MAC (iOS, PS3, PS4, Ouya currently unsure)
$??? Travel ‘Moga Pro’ Clip- attach your mobile to the controller and continue your game as a hand-held
$??? Media buttons which works while media play is the background (vol-, back, play/pause, forward, vol+)
$??? Custom Android App which maps controller buttons to game’s input (iOS currently unsure)
$??? No disposing when the batteries fail to recharge
If you plan on using it as a stand alone console, then $170USD for
the M.O.J.O. and $80USD for C.T.R.L.R is fair price for the tech.
But when you start adding up it’s ability, that’s where you get value for money!
How much better off would I be compared to the Ouya?
Cheapest retailer for the Ouya in Australia $136AUD.
So, $136AUD split equally: console $68AUD and controller $68AUD.
And add a once off price for the extra features/savings.
So for me it looks like this:
$68AUD M.O.J.O - High tech Micro Console
+$20AUD Tegra 4 + 2GB-RAM = twice the RAM & GPU (at least) of the Ouya/Gamestick
-$20AUD Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)- Only negative point, but upgrade to kitkat is coming soon.
+$15AUD No re-buying Android games- From my tablet, mostly apps not games, currently anyway.
+$68AUD No re-buying cheap disposable hardware every year- Saved me buying 2 Ouya’s (2013,2014)
+$15AUD Ability to continue mobile games seamlessly- Looking forward to this on my tablet/TV
+$10AUD Ability to use common BT/USB peripherals- I use a lot my Shintaro Mini Bluetooth keyboard
+$10AUD 16GB internally storage - More storage is important to me
+$20AUD MicroSDXC slot (up to 128G)- Really important to me for portability, I won’t take external drives
+$10AUD USB3 port and USB2 port- USB3 for fast transfer from drives and the USB2 for charging etc
+$5AUD Bluetooth Smart (v4)- lower latency 7ms. Game like a pro! no lag :)
+$0AUD Bluetooth Smart (v4)- Bluetooth Low Energy - less swapping of batteries
+$0AUD Nvidia GameStream - Don’t have an Nvidia card on my PC, but nice to know it can do
+$5AUD Portable size console - Important to me as I want to pack it up and take it to friends
+$0AUD rootable device - Not likely to, unless there’s a way to get Android 4.3
$226AUD - $68AUD = $158AUD Savings and features.
$68AUD C.T.R.L.R - High tech Controller
+$10AUD First party build quality- not cheap and disposable
+$15AUD Console grade Controller- no missing buttons ie Ouya’s missing start/select & gamestick’s R2/R2
+$10AUD Bluetooth Smart (v4)- lower latency 7ms. Game like a pro! no lag :)
+$0AUD Bluetooth Smart (v4)- Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE)- I got rechargeable AAA
+$5AUD 3 separate Bluetooth HID modes: Good feature to have both game and mouse support
+$30AUD Use it on everything! I was going to buy PC wireless controllers, Saved me $30AUD
+$30AUD Travel ‘Moga Pro’ Clip - I wanted one of this for a while, but $80USD too expensive
+$5AUD Media buttons- Excellent feature, very useful to me
+$5AUD Custom Android App - nice to know most games will work
+$15AUD AAA Batteries - I don’t buy anything I can’t change the batteries on
$193AUD - $68AUD = $125AUD Savings and features.
I valued things pretty ‘tightly’ and gave the OS a negative score, even though it’s better then the Ouya’s.
In total: I value the M.O.J.O at $419AUD, minus the Ouya’s value of $136AUD is $283AUD.
So to me, the M.O.J.O is valued $283AUD more then Ouya.
The M.O.J.O. here in Australia retails for $300AUD[/b]
So $419AUD worth of value for a $300AUD product, for me, it’s value for my currently very limited monies.
What about feedback from people that have it?
Yes, check online stores for feedback, it’s starting to come in!
Here’s Amazon reviews of the M.O.J.O
The M.O.G.O is still very, very new, so detailed information is very limited.
I still have a few questions I couldn’t find answers to:
2. Will the C.T.R.L.R (M.O.J.O. or retail) support iOS?
3. Where are the retail C.T.R.L.R sold? and for how much?
4. The C.T.R.L.R mobile App is there any information about it?
5. The C.T.R.L.R Profile 2 (mouse mode) does it support other platforms, ie PC/Mac?
These are all pretty minor questions, well to me anyway.
If you have an iOS phone I guess that question would be more important
to you, but I would say there’s a good chance that iOS support could
come, it wouldn’t make sense not to support iOS, especially having all
the BT HID options!
To summarise my ‘Game Developer’s Analysis Of the Mad Catz M.O.J.O.‘.
The M.O.J.O. is revolutionary if used to it’s fullest capabilities which provides a unique gaming experience:
Seamlessly gaming between micro-console, mobile(no C.T.R.L.R) and hand-held(mobile with C.T.R.L.R), at an affordable price.
It’s defiantly a game changer, more so then the Ouya ever hoped to be.
It shows that Mad Catz’s senior leaders are very much in touch with
their market, 3rd party gaming peripherals and it’s gamer customers.
Then being smart enough to see a space in the market which complements their existing products.
Having the balls to attempt something new in an uncertain landscape (micro-consoles).
And finally, having the skills to execute it with the integrity of the initial idea intact!
I haven’t had any hands on with the product but if it looks, plays and does what they claim, then it’s an easy purchase for $250USD ($300AUD)!
As always, any feedback or queries, let me know on page 1 or on twitter.
End of rant.
