Update: 2014-03-02 Mad catz MOJO Final thoughts
Below is not maintained and out of date.
The Ouya & Gamestick uses mobile phone technology from the previous generation (Tegra3 & mali400 respectively).
The mali400 is similar to the T3 in performance and in some cases slightly better.
To summaries the difference between the T3 to the T4 is that the T4’s GPU is about 2-3 times more powerful!
When the M.O.J.O gets an upgrade to Android 4.3 it will use Open GL ES 3 which will really make use of the T4 GPU.
The M.O.J.O. is built with Tegra 4 SoC (System on a Chip) running at 1.8GHz with 2GB RAM with 16GB of on board storage.
It uses Bluetooth Smart(V4) (and Classic-2.1) which only has 7 millisecond of latency and features Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE), power saving.
The PS3’s bluetooth has 22 milliseconds latency and the XBox360’s wireless has 20 millisecond latency.
Ouya uses Bluetooth Classic(2.1) which is 100 millisecond and higher battery usage.
This means that the M.O.J.O. C.T.R.L.R (and other BT devices) will have longer battery life and with a lot less latency.
The M.O.J.O. also support bluetooth v2.1 classic peripherals like a keyboard, mouse, gaming controller etc.
The M.O.J.O. also has a USB3 port allowing for 10x faster transmission speed then USB2.
You can install larger games/app on the USB3 enabled external driver for faster load times!
This is what I’m planning on doing.
It also has a MicroSD flash slot supporting up to 128GB (commonly 64GB), HDMI 1080p Out with 4k resolution support, 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Socket, 100Mbit Ethernet Network port and of cause Wi-Fi a/b/g/n Support.
The hardware along with the C.T.R.L.R, makes any potential setup very
achievable and very still very useful well into the future.
I don’t know if Mad Catz are planning a successor to the current M.O.J.O
but I can’t see this being obsolete until early/mid 2015!
No ecosystem to buy into!
No subscription fees for online gaming!
That’s the best thing, it lets you use the standard Android system, how you want!
It does come pre-installed with TegraZone,
which lets you easily find and review Android games optimized for your
any Tegra device then directs you to the Google Play Store to get the
download.
Games here are higher quality and can quickly find controller enabled games.
The hardware is not only capable of playing latest Android games but
also multitasking applications like a browser, chat client, office suite
etc, could all be used on a TV, like a desktop or top-set box.
There is also the Nvidia’s Linux For Tegra Project for the brave nerds that want to attempt a dual boot system!
What does no forced Re-buys mean?
Ouya/Gamestick have their own ecosystem (their own branded stores).
You don’t have access to Google play, unless you somehow figure out how to exit their store and log into your Google play.
Of cause, this isn’t recommended as it’s not the intended purpose.
The intended purpose is that you re-buy your games/apps through their store, even if you already have it on your Google play.
In the software industry this called ‘Walled garden’ because you have to pay to be in the garden which you can’t leave and if you do, you leave with nothing.
This cost of Re-buying should be considered into your purchase decision making, especially if you have purchased a lot of Android games/apps.
I’m a ’starving’ indie game developer, why should I get this or even support this?
Ouya sales haven’t been impressive with only 27% percent of Ouya console owners having bought games .
Most people wanting this device will primarily want it for high-end Android gaming and not so much emulation.
There is also a definite trickle down effect, to not so high-end games but still with controller support.
Developers with games in the TegraZone with controller support will deferentially have an increase in sales due to the M.O.J.O.
So, if you need to buy a Tegra 4 device and a good Bluetooth controller, the M.O.J.O. would be among the most cost effective solutions to date. The C.T.R.L.R, functionality/button wise is as good as or better then Sony’s or Microsoft’s controller. It definitely doesn’t lack buttons!
As explained before, having or not having a controller interface in your game could be the factor that makes it or breaks it. I believe, in a few years time, mobile controller support will just be expected.
Lastly, the C.T.R.L.R is easy to develop for.
The controllers are programmed via the Android API using the ‘NVIDIA Tegra’ specifications, like the gamestick.
It’s so easy you can develop for the M.O.J.O. without even owning one!
What is Game streaming? and Can the M.O.J.O do it?
NVIDIA GameStream is a proprietary technology built for Nvidia products which streams a PC game to your mobile device.
The PC must have NVIDIA’s “Keplar” GeForce card or newer and the mobile device must be Tegra 4 powered or newer.
Currently I don’t think it can, “However, we have not yet confirmed when this functionality will be enabled.
For PC streaming to work, M.O.J.O. will require a simple update which we hope will be available shortly after launch.”
But I want emulators!
Sadly, I believe Ouya was made popular on the back of emulators and poorly executed!
Well, it’s not commonly know whether the M.O.J.O. supports emulators,
it’s not bluntly advertised as an emulator device like the Ouya was. If
you use Android, you already know the answer!
WELL?? DOES IT SUPPORT EMULATORS?!?!?!?!
lol!! Yes!! Of cause it does!!
How many emulators are in Google play store??? HUNDREDS!!!!
That’s a lot more then Ouya!!!
Emulate to your wallets content!
Will the emulator support the M.O.J.O. C.T.R.L.R?
Good chances it will, even if it’s via their mobile App (see below).
Here’s a thread from a M.O.J.O. developer reporting a bug in the MUPEN 64 Android Edition controller support.
You can always Google: Mad Catz C.T.R.L.R EMULATOR_NAME
If nothing comes up, maybe ask on the EMULATOR_NAME’s forum?
I’d rather play emulators on a M.O.J.O. then an Ouya/Gamestick, better graphics and most importantly a better controller, which is a great segway to..
